About Eye Allergies
Understanding Allergic Conjunctivitis
Eye allergies, or allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the immune system overreacts to airborne environmental allergens. When these substances come into contact with the conjunctiva (the clear membrane covering the white part of the eye and inner lids), mast cells release histamine and inflammatory mediators, prompting intense itching, redness, swelling, and watering.
Allergic conjunctivitis can be seasonal (triggered by outdoor pollens and moulds) or perennial (persisting year-round due to dust mites, pet dander, or indoor irritants). Unlike bacterial or viral pink eye, allergic conjunctivitis is non-contagious and almost always affects both eyes simultaneously.
Common Environmental Triggers
- Pollen from trees, grasses, and weeds
- House dust mites and microscopic debris
- Pet dander and fur
- Airborne mould spores
- Cigarette smoke, aerosols, and strong perfumes
